"Abuelos" Dia de los Muertos Painting

October has arrived! Which means Dia de los Muertos is fast approaching!  This is a painting I created a few years ago while I was working for the Mexic-Arte Museum here in Austin, Tx.  I was researching the holiday to plan children's activities for the Viva la Vida Fest and it inspired me to make a painting channeling this beautiful Mexican tradition.

A few months prior my grandfather passed away so I chose to paint him resting under the house with his dog, Gypsy.  I had learned through my research that ofter times the deceased would be buried with their pet, and the older traditions buried the dead under the house they lived in.  My grandmother, still living, stays in the house, remembering her husband and seeking comfort in knowing he has peacefully passed to the other side.

I had a lot of fun painting this and it was quite cathartic at the same time, I hope you enjoy!
